Sign Not Lighting Up? A Repair Checklist for Long Island Businesses

3 min read · Mineola Signs & Awnings

Why a storefront sign goes dark, flickers or loses letters, what you can check safely and when to call a sign repair crew on Long Island.

A sign that is dark at night tells people you are closed, even when you are open. Half-lit letters can turn a name into a different word. If your storefront sign stopped lighting up, or only part of it works, this guide explains the most common causes, what you can safely check yourself and when it is time to call a sign company. It is written from the jobs our service crews see every week across Long Island.

Key Takeaways

  • When the whole sign is dark, the cause is often simple: a tripped breaker, a switch, a timer or a photocell.
  • When one letter or one section is dark, the usual cause is a failed LED module, a loose connection or a failing power supply.
  • Flickering and dimming are early warnings of a power supply at the end of its life.
  • Anything that involves opening the sign, high voltage or a ladder near the street should be left to a licensed sign crew.
  • We repair signs we did not build, and an old neon or fluorescent sign can often be upgraded to LED instead of replaced.

The whole sign is dark

Start with what you can check safely from inside the store:

  • The breaker. Signs are usually on their own circuit. A breaker can trip after a storm or a power surge.
  • The switch. Many signs have a switch inside the store or near the electrical panel, and it is easy for someone to turn it off by accident.
  • The timer or photocell. A timer that lost power or was not updated after a clock change will keep the sign off. A dirty or blocked photocell can think it is daytime.

If all of that looks fine and the sign is still dark, the problem is usually inside the sign or in the power supply, and it is time for a service call.

One letter or one section is out

Channel letter signs are built as separate letters, each with its own LED modules. When one letter goes dark, the most common causes are a failed LED string, a broken connection between letters or water inside the letter. Older signs may have several letters on one power supply; when that supply fails, a whole word can go out at once. These repairs are quick for a crew with the right parts, and they are much less expensive than a new sign.

The sign flickers, dims or turns on late

Flickering, uneven brightness or a sign that takes a while to come on in the cold are classic signs of a power supply or an old transformer near the end of its life. Replacing it early avoids a full outage later. If the sign still runs on neon or fluorescent tubes, this is also the right moment to consider an LED retrofit: brighter, more even light, lower electric bills and far fewer service calls.

The face is faded, cracked or missing

Sun and weather fade and crack acrylic faces and vinyl over the years. A faded face makes even a lit sign look tired. New faces with fresh vinyl can make an existing cabinet or set of letters look new again, often without touching the electrical work. If you are rebranding, new faces are also the fastest way to change the name on an existing sign.

Why use the same company that builds signs

A sign company that fabricates in its own shop can make a matching letter, a new face or a custom part instead of telling you the whole sign has to go. We have built and installed signs on Long Island since 1924, our crews use our own bucket trucks, and we handle the permit when a repair changes the sign. Recent work is on our installation and service page and our channel letters page.
